The Hamburg 8 handcuffs open by folding them flat. There is a notch in the top of the cylinder that allows them to open when the 2 sides are folded flat against each other. When they are unfolded they won’t open without the key. The gimmicked pairs have a second notch that will let you open them without folding them flat, but your hands have to be very close together. An audience member who inspects them will probably not think to hold their hands so close together and would think they were legit. In a magic act you would put the handcuffs on your self in front, turn around, hold your hands together to release them, and turn back around with the handcuffs held in one hand to everyone’s amazement.
